EPR Penalties Explained
Environmental Compensation (EC) is the financial penalty imposed when a PIBO fails to meet its EPR target. The rate is set per tonne of unfulfilled obligation and is published by the CPCB.
EC compounds: missing your target one year does not erase the obligation — the shortfall carries forward, often with a multiplier in subsequent years.
Beyond money, non-compliance can mean delisting from large retailers, B2B contract risk, and reputational damage with ESG-sensitive investors.
The cheapest path is almost always early compliance: register, plan a year ahead, and source credits before the year-end rush when prices typically spike.
